Brevard Public Schools Celebrate Back‑to‑Back ‘A’ District Ratings

Brevard Public Schools (BPS) is proudly marking its second straight year being named an “A” district by the Florida Department of Education. The achievement reflects continued momentum and a growing culture of excellence across the county.

A District That Keeps Rising

Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell credited the district’s success to the collective effort of teachers, staff, and students. “This consecutive ‘A’ rating reflects the tireless dedication of our students, educators, and staff. Their focus on academic excellence continues to propel BPS forward,” he said, emphasizing that this achievement is the result of hard classroom work—not administrative influence.

School Board Chair Gene Trent pointed to the district’s clear trajectory, especially in middle schools: “Two years of ‘A’ ratings signal that Brevard Public Schools is on an upward path. Our middle schools, in particular, are setting a high standard with innovative teaching and impressive gains.”

Academic Gains That Stand Out

The 2024–25 evaluations showed measurable growth across core areas:

  • English Language Arts (ELA): A 3‑point rise in the percentage of students at or above grade level on PM3 assessments—surpassing state averages by 4 points.
  • Mathematics: Matched state averages through gains in PM3 and End‑of‑Course (EOC) exams, with improvement observed across multiple grade levels.
  • Science / EOC: Brevard students performed ahead of state benchmarks. Highlights include 60% proficiency in 5th Grade Science, 55% in 8th Grade Science, 71% in Biology I, and 73% in Civics.

District Performance in Practice

Out of all district schools, 67% earned either an A or B, and 10 schools raised their letter grade over the prior year. Notably, no Brevard schools received a D or F—a commendable feat for a district serving over 74,000 students across more than 100 institutions.

Board Member Matt Susin emphasized that this success was truly a community effort: everyone from parents and bus drivers to custodians and classroom educators contributed, making it “a village” effort. Likewise, Board Member Megan Wright celebrated the learning gains achieved, and expressed confidence in BPS’s progress toward a Top‑10 statewide ranking by 2030.

What Made the Difference

Several district-wide strategies helped support these outcomes:

  • Stricter discipline policies (e.g. cell phone bans and increased consistency in behavior expectations) helped foster a more focused learning atmosphere.
  • Targeted algebra support and intervention materials were funded by grants and directed to middle school students needing more assistance.
  • Data-informed instruction, where performance tracking and tactical adjustments guided teachers’ efforts across all grade levels.

Looking Forward

While celebrating the back-to-back “A” ratings, leadership stresses that the district views this as a foundation—not a finish line. Ongoing goals include further elevating academic performance and reaching the ambitious benchmark of being among the top ten districts in Florida by 2030.

With a reputation solidifying as one of the state’s rising educational leaders, Brevard Public Schools is positioning itself for sustained growth. As the district enters the 2025–26 school year, it brings both validated success and forward-looking momentum to the table.
